Zambia and Zimbabwe Records 1984-2003; 1998-2001

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission support efforts for Zambia and Zimbabwe. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zambia (ELCZa) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ) in mission efforts. The records are from 1984-2003, but the bulk date from 1993-2001. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of DGM program directors the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include minutes, handwritten, typewritten, or electronic mail business correspondence, audit reports, an itinerary, reports, project proposals, and trip reports. Subject matter pertaining to Zambia includes the possibility of establishing a relationship with ELCZa and ELCA international scholarships for Zambian students to study theology. Subject matter related to Zimbabwe includes internships, volunteers, and the crisis in the ELCZ, scholarships, and HIV/AIDS programs. While this series includes records related to the ELCZa and ELCZ and their work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
